It is surprisingly loud however, and does need an external power supply.
Overall, glad I got it. Right now I am using it to hold my iTunes library, and will soon buy a smaller / quieter / usb-powered one and phase this one into archiving my backups.

Summary: good for backup but not for normal use
Comment: The HD itself is nice but the case causes the drive to sleep and often does not wake back up. This causes endless hangups any time my system needs to access a file on there. I've already downloaded firmware updates and they helped a little, but not enough.
